What does this quality mark mean?

You can be assured that any New Zealand Greenshell™ mussel powder displaying this quality mark meets the following criteria:

  • contains only authentic New Zealand Greenshell™ mussel powder - not blended with other products

  • contains a minimum of 8% lipids (at least 8g / 100g of lipids/fats)

Why is lipid content important?

A superior nutritional profile can affect potency and efficacy. The important omega-3s, including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are found in the unique lipids (fats) of our powders.

A prized taonga (treasure)

Aotearoa New Zealand Greenshell™ mussel powder is a nutraceutical product extracted from the indigenous bivalve mollusc perna canaliculus. Our Greenshell™ mussels are sustainably farmed and a prized taonga (treasure) to Māori (indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand). Māori have long known the benefits of consuming our mussels (known as kūtai or kūkūtai in te reo Māori) and now the world is learning about these superfoods and the powerful health benefits they can provide.

Ensuring credibility and integrity

This quality mark was created through industry collaboration as producers recognised the need to clearly and easily identify the authenticity and quality of our New Zealand Greenshell™ mussel powder - for the sake of our customers and our reputation.

Industry worked together to agree on the criteria, which are based on independent and robust scientific methodology.

Customers can be assured that mussel powder displaying this quality mark is authentic (from New Zealand and not mixed with other powders) and contains a minimum of 8% lipids.

Each batch of Greenshell™ mussel powder is tested by an independent, registered laboratory to ensure it meets this standard. These records are retained by producers to ensure the credibility and integrity of this programme and provide independent proof that their products are eligible to use this quality mark.

Aquaculture New Zealand (AQNZ), as the industry representative body, has worked with producers to create this mark, set the agreed threshold and outline the required process ensuring customers can trust the compliance and credibility of this quality assurance programme.
