MTI

MTI

Mahurangi Technical Institute’s specialised aquaculture research, production and education facility was opened in May 2007 by the Minister of Fisheries.

In this world-class facility, research is conducted on a number of fish species including endangered native fish as part of their preparation for reintroduction into the natural environment.

As well as conducting ground-breaking research into the breeding of NZ Short Finned Eels, juvenile fish are also produced for use by fish farmers in NZ and overseas for growing on to market size.

Our Aquaculture courses are taught in classrooms within our research facilities allowing students to gain a full understanding by applying their theoretical studies to practical aquaculture. MTI is the only Ministry of Fisheries licenced fish farm combining research and innovation with aquaculture education.

We can offer you the following:

  • Certificate in Aquatic Studies (Aquaculture) – A Certificate in Aquatic Studies will open up your world to a host of opportunities from aquaculture and aquarium operations to marine administration and eco-tourism.
  • Electric Fishing Certificate – Electric fishing is a tool used by D.O.C and water management consultants to survey fresh water streams for species diversity and numbers. Learn the theory behind the equipment and how to apply it safely in the field.
  • Certificate in Finfish Culture – The Certificate in Finfish Culture is a 40 week distance learning qualification aimed at people working or wanting to work with ornamental and farmed fish.

For more information visit the Mahurangi Technical Institute’s website.
