Industry welcomes Government strategy

June 14, 2012

Aquaculture New Zealand (AQNZ) welcomes this week’s release of the Government’s Aquaculture Strategy as a strong show of support for the industry.

“Aquaculture is good for regional communities, good for the economy and good for New Zealand,” said AQNZ Chair Peter Vitasovich.

“The Government’s Strategy recognises the potential of aquaculture and provides a solid framework for enhancing the sector’s ability to sustainably produce premium seafood, create regional jobs and generate much needed export earnings for the economy.

“Building on the legislative improvements made last year, the strategy is critical to the successful implementation of those changes”

“Aquaculture is a significant primary industry that employs more than 3000 Kiwis, exports products to 79 countries and generated over $400 million of revenue in 2011.

“As well as fantastic flavour profiles, the health benefits of New Zealand’s Greenshell Mussels, King Salmon and Pacific Oysters are recognised by nutritional experts and are the source of great potential in the high-value dietary supplement, functional foods and cosmetic industries.

“This strategy complements the Industry’s plan to reach $1 billion in sales by 2025, and sets out a whole-of-Government approach to facilitate growth.

“The sector is very appreciative of the excellent work being done at the Ministry for Primary Industries and across Government in support of our sector, however progress and innovation must still be led from within the industry and we look forward to working with the Government, and all its agencies, to deliver on the industry’s potential.”
