CEO’s Welcome

It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the 4th annual New Zealand Aquaculture Conference.

This year the theme is ‘be inspired’ – and we’ve drawn together an inspiring cast of speakers from across New Zealand and around the world to provide the ideas, insight, and research to help you make the most of the opportunities on the horizon.

This year’s conference is something of a landmark event as it follows a significant law change that is set to take New Zealand’s aquaculture sector into its next phase of sustainable growth.

With an eye on the fast developing future, this conference focuses on opportunities the reformed legal framework will create for the sector over the next decade, moving towards our billion dollar goal.

Our cast of experts will explore the key themes that underpin the sector’s sustainable growth – value enhancement, innovation, law, sustainability, health, market development, Maori business, investment, the global economy, and of course our superb food.

We are delighted to welcome back the Prime Minister of New Zealand the Rt. Hon. John Key to officially open the event.
The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Hon. Phil Heatley returns for the third time, heading up an impressive government team that includes three agency heads: Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry director general Wayne McNee, Ministry of Foreign Affairs CEO and secretary John Allen and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise CEO Peter Chrisp.

We also welcome former Fonterra CEO Andrew Ferrier, Maori Trustee Jamie Tuuta, and the new Aquaculture Stewardship
Council CEO Chris Ninnes.

We’re showcasing the remarkable talent within the sector with sessions from New Zealand King Salmon CEO Grant Rosewarne, Tio Point Oysters’ director Bruce Hearn, and Mount Cook Alpine Salmon CEO Geoff Matthews.

It’s a pleasure to welcome our international speakers in Roy Palmer, Cindy Williams and Frances Bender from Australia and Bernard Leveau from France.

And it wouldn’t be our conference without a celebration of superb food – to kick start the party we have celebrity foodie Peta Mathias introducing top Christchurch Chefs Andrew Brown and Jonny Schwass as they prepare your foods to fine dining standards at our famous Cocktail Function.
Exciting speakers, latest information, amazing food…..it’s time
to be inspired.

Mike Burrell,
CEO
